From Strategy to Style Guides

At Odyssey, a DTC growth marketing agency focused on social ads and UGC content, I worked as a Design Intern supporting 50+ clients. I created static ads, advertorials, responsive UI designs, and helped redesign internal style guides.

Working closely with Creative Strategists, Senior Designers, and clients, I worked in a fast-paced environment that sharpened my efficiency and time management. It was a great experience designing for a wide range of brands and industries and I’m excited to share a bit about the process and highlight some of my favorite work!

Understanding the Branding Identities of the Core Clients

Before diving into any designs or reading over any requirements created by overseeing Creative Strategists, the first step was understanding and reading through the brand guidelines and brand identity.

I made sure to consider font, colors, past statics as well as past client preferences before designing.

Design Execution Within Brand Systems

Odyssey had a streamlined design and handoff process. After reviewing the brand’s style guide—some of which I helped create. I would typically develop five design variations based on the concepts or references shared by the Creative Strategists.

Designing within the boundaries of brand guidelines and creative direction taught me how to strike a balance between staying true to the brief and applying creative problem-solving. I also looked for moments to suggest thoughtful variations that could elevate the original concept.
Review & Revisions

Refining Visual Strategy Through Feedback

Once approved by the Creative Strategist, the static goes for review to the client where they often have additional notes and revisions. After a few iterations addressing client feedback, we launch the ad and review performance. Based on the performance of ads, we’d adapt our design strategies and focuses to better fit the results

Driving Performance Through Data

Some of my strongest statics included ROAS up to 2.29, as well as Convert Scores up to 75 and in total, 575k+ impressions.

It was essential to review performance of ads every 1-2 weeks to determine and  conclude why certain ads performed better than others.

Message Clarity, Product Emphasis and Contrast became my guiding principles at the forefront of my design process
primary Learnings

Iteration and Variations are King

When designing for multiple different sources of feedback, it’s important not to become perfectionistic and clingy to your designs, but be open to change and iterations. Every point of feedback is an opportunity to learn more about design and about the client’s preferences

Communicate Efficiently

When working cross-functionally, it’s important to respect and be conscious of other’s time. So when it comes to communication, I kept everything straight and to the point and always tried to solve problems on my own first before reaching out to other for assistance, honing my self sufficiency
